Freelance HO layout, basement room 23×43, mid 50’s, south central Colorado, steam & diesel, point-to-point with three branch lines, scenery just started. The control system is NCE with all radio throttles. Operation uses Car Cards and Waybills, with mostly 8-10 car trains plus a caboose. We have several local freights with lots of switching, a few through trains, plus several special trains such as the ore trains, the coal trains, and the log train. These also have lots of switching. There are two yards that usually need a yardmaster and a switcher engineer at each yard. A normal session lasts about 3-4 hours. The concept is to run slow trains at scale speed, no clock, and enjoy running a railroad.
